Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality is soliciting applications for the managing editor’s position.
MFF is a peer-reviewed digital journal supported by the Society of Medieval Feminist Scholarship and (beginning June 2021) published through Medieval Institute Publications. We put out two issues annually–typically, one special issue and one general issue–alongside subsidia issues through our translation series. Each issue is roughly between 140-160 pages in length (approximately 4-8 articles, plus book reviews).
The managing editor is a 5-year appointment. The individual in this position works and liaises with the MFF editorial board and MIP staff. Primary duties include managing incoming submissions, identifying potential reviewers for submitted articles, evaluating reviewer qualifications and assigning reviews, keeping track of the publication process for each submission, sending decision notifications to authors, and coordinating as needed with the associate editors, general editor, and MIP staff to finalize articles for publication, including copyediting as needed. The time commitment involved varies dependent upon the number of articles we receive and are shepherding through the pipeline.
Qualifications: The managing editor must hold a PhD with a concentration in one or more fields related to medieval studies and training or expertise in women, gender, and sexuality studies. Familiarity with academic publishing, including experience on the editorial board of an academic journal and/or a solid list of peer-reviewed journal publications is required. A strong interdisciplinary knowledge of a range of scholars working in medieval literatures, languages, History, Art History, and similar upon whom the editor might call as reviewers is necessary. Familiarity with Bepress is strongly preferred.
Considerations: Please note that this is not a paid position, but rather a service-to-the-profession appointment. Academics at the associate professor level or higher/ having achieved tenure, or scholars working in academic publishing, editing, or other alt-ac positions where tenure is not a consideration, are best suited to this position. Individuals whose employer could support this work as part of the scholar’s annual service load (with a course release or other lessening of home institute service duties for the duration of the appointment, for example) are strongly encouraged to request those accommodations; SMFS leadership is happy to furnish a letter to administrators requesting this consideration, if desired.
